John O'Connor gained his international reputation as a songwriter from his initial recordings on Flying Fish Records in the 80s. Geoffrey Himes of the Washington Post named his debut album, Songs For Our Times, one of the best albums of the year. In his review he wrote of John's original songs, "Mister, Slow It Down... is the best hitchhiking song since Kris Kristofferson’s Me and Bobby McGee. O'Connor’s Missy and Me is the best song about old age since John Prine’s Hello in There.”

Joe Jencks, says that John's music is "...evocative of something timeless and familiar - yet full of lyrical and musical surprises." (Joe recorded John's song We Won on his Rise as One album.)

And John's longtime friend, John McCutcheon wrote: "John is one of those rare songwriters that paints honest non-romanticized pictures of people's lives; like Woody Guthrie or Utah Phillips..." John brings to his concerts his songs, stories and poems of love, art, war, peace and revolution, laced with humor and pathos and his audiences walk away with his unforgettable tunes lingering in their hearts and minds.
