FAI’s 2021 conference theme, “Living Traditions”, will explore ideas of cultural preservation, genre evolution, and musical migration. With the theme as a guide, the conference will highlight a wide variety of traditional and tradition-informed musical genres from around the world. Featured programming will include a Global Summit of folklorists and a CommUNITY gathering focused on the folk community’s role in addressing the climate crisis.
The return of the conference to Kansas City next February coincides with the bicentennial celebration of the State of Missouri. To honor the traditions and history of the region, the 2021 conference art features the Missouri state bird, the Eastern bluebird. The hand-stitched design, created by Fawn Lies, is a nod to traditional folk art, with the bird also alluding to the concepts of musical migration and environmental stewardship.
