Each year during the International Folk Music Awards, FAI presents three Elaine Weissman Lifetime Achievement Awards (IFMAs). Named after the organization’s co-founder, the awards were created to honor the cultural impact of legendary folk music figures, one Living, one Legacy, and one Organizational/Academic.
Past recipients include Living - David Amram, Peggy Seeger, Tom Paxton; Legacy - Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Bessie Jones, Stan Rogers, Malvina Reynolds; Business/Academic - The English Folk Dance and Song Society, Folkways Records, Canadian Society for Traditional Music. Living - Peter, Paul and Mary
|
|
During an era that witnessed the intersection of the Civil Rights Movement, the tensions of the Cold War and the Vietnam War, American folk music pioneers Peter, Paul and Mary provided a voice for a generation during uncertain times. Legacy - Richie Havens (1941 - 2013)
|
|
Richie Havens started his career in Greenwich Village, an area in New York City known for its progressive culture and social openness. He released his official debut album, Mixed Bag, in 1966 to critical acclaim. Havens made history with a legendary three-hour performance that opened the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Organizational - Elektra Records
|
|
Founded in 1950 by American businessman Jac Holzman and Paul Rickolt, Elektra Records helped spawn the growth of contemporary folk music. Initially, the record label focused primarily on folk music releasing best-selling albums from Oscar Brand, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Theodore Bikel, and Judy Collins. Click here to read the full bio.

This year’s jury-selected roster represents an exciting array of international artists representing many folk genres including Appalachian, Americana, Blues, Bluegrass, Celtic, Cajun, Global Roots, Indigenous, Indie-Folk, Latin, Old-Time, Singer-Songwriters, and more.
Registered member-artists seeking private showcases may post profiles and bio information in the Private Showcase Forum on our website for the consideration of Private Showcase hosts.

First-Timer Resources
In 2017, over 1,000 people attended the FAI conference for the first time. The five-day event is a powerful platform for networking and career growth, and it can be hard to navigate for first-time attendees. If you are planning to attend the conference for the first time, please take a look at the following resources.

First-Timers Q&A Forum: This forum on FAI's website forum is a friendly place to reach out to the membership for advice. You must be a member of FAI to post, but the forum feed is visible to all public.
A First-Timers Orientation session will be held on Thursday, February 15th at 10:30 am in Century C.

First-Timer's Room
FAI sponsors two private showcase rooms for first-time attendees and new acts. Apply to showcase.
Spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis for artists who are registered for the 2018 conference. Showcases are held 10 pm - 3 am, February 14 and 10:30 pm - 3 am, February 15-17.

Connecting Folk
For First-Timers
Sometimes a simple conversation with someone who has been there can make all the difference in the world. Sign-up here and we’ll connect you with a peer who is ready and willing to answer your questions.
Become a Guide
Volunteer to become a Connecting Folk guide by filling out this form. Guides are asked to make a 30-minute commitment in advance of the conference for each first-timer connection in the form of a call or meeting. Once enrolled, FAI staff will connect you via email. At that point, it will be up to the guide and first-timer to arrange a phone or in-person meeting.
Sign up deadline is January 21, 2018. Subject to availability.

2018 Artist in Residence - Henry Nam
|
|
|
The 2018 Artist in Residence project will explore the connection between music, sound, mathematics, and art. FAI has connected Korean-American artist Henry Nam with the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Applied Math Department to develop and interpret a percussive instrumental guitar composition, in turn collaborating with the Media Arts students of the Kansas City Art Institute.
Henry Nam is a percussive fingerstyle acoustic guitar player following in the footsteps of Michael Hedges, Leo Kottke, Don Ross, and Preston Reed. Born on a US military base in the Republic of Korea, raised in San Francisco, Germany, Maryland, and Philadelphia and currently based in Washington, DC, musician and autodidact Henry Nam is the product of an international, multicultural upbringing that manifests not only in his diverse musical styling but also in his attitudes about the role of the arts as a universal language able to help people of all backgrounds build meaningful connection and communicate constructively.

Friday, December 5, 2017, from noon - 1 pm CST
In this webinar, Matthew Covey, Tamizdat, will provide a primer on the U.S. artist visa process.
Topics will include:
- deciding which visa to seek
- how to decide when a work visa is needed (a detailed explanation)
- which evidence to provide
- resources for the process
- response timeframe guidelines
- current problems with the processing system
- state of the current political climate
- updates on policy advocacy
- duration of stay requests

Welcome New FAI Board Member - Greg Torrington
|
|
|
The FAI Board of Directors is proud to announce the appointment of Greg Torrington to the board.
Greg is a Montréal-based music programmer for the Stingray Music streaming service, available via digital cable and online throughout North America to over 20 million homes. In the US, Stingray has over 100 channels available via several cable providers, including AT&T and over 2000 more streams on its phone and Internet apps. Greg curates the roots programming heard on Stingray’s separate 24/7 channels for Folk-Roots, Blues, Bluegrass, and Americana, as well as a variety of country channels and specialty streams. He’s been on the Canadian Country Music Association board and currently also sits on the Folk Music Canada board.

Welcome to Fall/ 2018 Conference Interns
|
|
|
Folk Alliance International is pleased to provide paid internship opportunities as on-the-job training, course-related practical experience, and professional development for college students who are interested in the music industry, folk music community, and arts administration.
An FAI internship is primarily focused on support of the day to day operations of the organization, with primary activity related to membership, marketing, research, and event planning.
Starting with us this fall and continuing through the conference, we are pleased to announce our newest team members.

Shannon Quick | Communications Intern
Shannon has been a part of the Kansas folk scene since an early age playing bluegrass, old-time and Celtic fiddle. Over the years she has formed and joined various bands in Lawrence and Kansas City. Three of her bands have attended the annual Folk Alliance International conference performing in the official and private showcases, and Folk Festival. Shannon also competed on America's Got Talent Season 11 with the band Julian Davis and the Hay-Burners. She is a recent graduate of The University of Kansas with a degree in journalism and a minor in business. She hopes to use her combined passion for advertising along with folk music to help make a difference at FAI as a communications intern.

Forrest Beck | General Office Intern
Forrest grew up on a farm in the small town of Kirksville, Missouri, where her parents immersed her and her sister in all things music at a very early age. She just graduated from Truman State University with her Bachelor’s of Music Performance with an emphasis in Horn. Before coming to Folk Alliance, she had a summer internship in the development department of the Kansas City Symphony. Breaking away from the performance side of music, she is excited to grow in the field of arts administration and continues to play horn in several regional wind symphonies and orchestras. Forrest supports the FAI office in all areas including general office support, development, membership, and conference planning.
