Folk Alliance International announces partnership with
JM International
 

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: On Saturday, September 22, in Minneapolis (U.S.), thirty American and international cultural professionals met for the first time to discuss the creation of Ethno USA. 

Ethno is JM International’s program for folk, world, and traditional music with a thirty-year history that began in Sweden in 1990. Present today in over twenty countries, Ethno engages young musicians (ages 16-30) through a series of international music camps and activities. Ethno is defined by its democratic peer-to-peer learning approach that facilitates and promotes intercultural dialogue in the spirit of generosity, respect, and openness.

Ethno USA is planned to take place in 2020 in the Midwest/Upper Appalachian region and will be the first Ethno in North America. 

Folk Alliance International (FAI) has partnered with JM International (JMI) to bring Ethno to the US together with local and national stakeholders. 

JMI and FAI are looking for a highly-skilled, “all-round” Ethno USA Project Coordinator to join the Ethno team, working at Folk Alliance International, based out of Kansas City.

This is a multifaceted role for a candidate who has a wide range of expertise to take on all Ethno USA-related project tasks with a high degree of competence.

To do this we have partnered with acclaimed stakeholder research firm, Slover Linett (whose notable past clients include Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Levitt Pavilions, The Smithsonian Museum, and more).


We invite all artists, industry, and venue/festival presenters who represent folk music to participate (inclusive of Appalachian, Americana, Blues, Bluegrass, Celtic, Cajun, Francophone, Global Roots, Indigenous, Latin, Old Time, Traditional, Singer-Songwriter, and Spoken Word).

 

The high-level goals of this study are to:

  • Lead a responsive dialogue about the evolving state of the folk field.
  • Encourage the folk community to self-reflect and engage in a deeper understanding of itself.
  • Build meaningful conversation and collaboration between artists, presenters, and industry.

Creating a Safe and Inclusive Music Industry


Folk Alliance International (FAI) would like to once again state that everyone is welcome at our conference, in our membership, and under the broad banner of folk music. We are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and inviting community for all who love, make, and support music.
Over the past year and a half FAI staff and board have participated in skills and resource building activities to enhance our awareness, leadership, and impact on these issues. This has included a facilitated diversity and inclusion workshop, a seminar on racial equity, and sexual harassment and discrimination prevention training.
Additionally, FAI’s Advocacy Committee has drafted a pledge entitled "Committing to a Safe Music Community" for any member or delegate to sign onsite at the conference. The pledge reads as follows:

"As a member of the music community, I pledge to create and uphold a safe environment for all, one that respects all national, geographic, cultural, ethnic, social, economic, gender, sexuality, orientation, mobility, and other forms of diversity. I reject harassment and discrimination of any kind. When I witness behavior that undermines or threatens the safety and security of any participant, I pledge to address this behavior as unacceptable. I will seek training to learn how to address these issues appropriately."

2018 Conference Actions


Friday, Feb 16, 12 pm, Century C ballroom: Community Gathering: Sexual and Gender Harassment and Discrimination in the Music Industry.
This professionally facilitated training session for all delegates will provide resources, tools, and methods for allies and advocates to build safe spaces for all within the folk community. After the session, there will be additional time for break-out discussions in facilitated affinity groups. Trained advocates will be available to provide emotional support, crisis intervention, information, referrals, and problem-solving during and after the presentation and training.

In order to prepare relevant content for the session, the trainers (MOCSA and Diane Burkholder with The DB Approach) have created a brief survey to collect perspectives and experiences related to harassment and discrimination from our community. All responses will remain anonymous.

Saturday, Feb 17, 10:30 am, Liberty Ballroom: Showing Up for Racial Justice training
SURJ is a national network organizing white people for racial justice. Through personal support, political education, and solidarity action, SURJ moves people to act as part of a multi­racial majority for justice with passion and accountability. This session will ground attendees in seven Points of Unity (essential values to win a racial justice movement) while practicing tangible skills to discuss and disrupt white privilege in ourselves and the community at large.

Resources and Action

If you experience or witness discrimination and/or harassment at a music industry event, take action with whichever suggestion below is relevant to the situation.
  • Tell the offending party to stop
  • Talk immediately with a trusted colleague
  • Contact your union, supervisor, or HR department
  • Call the 24 hour National Sexual Assault Hotline: 1-800-656-4673
  • Call the local police at 911
  • At Folk Alliance International events you may also

FAI Values Statement

Developed in 2016 and released January 2017, the following is a re-issue of Folk Alliance International’s Values Statement.

We believe that greater diversity throughout the organization allows Folk Alliance International to:
  • Build a more creative and compassionate community. Folk music has historically been inclusionary at all levels and by nature brings community together. It has often been a part of movements for social and political change.
  • Spur awareness of other cultures and perspectives. We value sharing knowledge and conducting ourselves in a respectful manner. Interaction with a broader membership base introduces us to traditions from different countries and regions, along with perspectives of sub-communities within Folk Alliance International. Openness to and acceptance of these varied interests and perspectives will lead to greater inclusion and participation.
  • Provide enhanced opportunities for the organization and members. These additional viewpoints and communities will support our intrinsic value by fostering international and multicultural understanding, allowing FAI to make a greater impact in the music community and the world at large.
We also believe that bringing greater diversity to the organization will challenge our assumptions while revealing our similarities. It will have indefinable, intangible, and unpredictable effects. The costs of international expansion are worthwhile and of value.

As emphatically as we welcome people of all national, geographic, cultural, ethnic, social, economic, gender, sexuality, orientation, mobility, and other forms of diversity to our events and organization, we also wish to express our rejection of discrimination and harassment.

As defined by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC): “Harassment is a form of employment discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, (ADEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, (ADA).” In accordance with US law, our board recently adopted refined language regarding harassment in our employee handbook.

We encourage our members to adopt similar policies in their places of work and to adhere to this standard at their events.

Matthew Covey

Covey has worked in music and arts immigration since the 90's. As a member of the critically acclaimed US/Slovak indie-rock band Skulpey, Amsterdam-based booking agent for the Knitting Factory Records’, and the manager of Grammy Award-winning band, the Klezmatics, Covey’s varied career has given him a broad understanding of the entertainment industries. Covey is a founding director of Tamizdat, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that promotes international cultural exchange. He is president of Howard Zinn’s Voices of a People’s History and founder of ContraBanned. He holds a J.D. from New York Law, an M.A. focussing on post-colonial literary theory from University College Dublin, a B.A. in English from Oberlin College, and is admitted to the New York Bar.

The ExChange, a Micro-Conference in Ireland

 
Folk Alliance International (FAI) is proud to announce The ExChange, a pilot micro-conference currently underway in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland. The event is FAI's first event orchestrated outside of North America in the organization's 30-year history. The purpose of The ExChange is to forge folk industry relationships, showcase emerging talent, celebrate legends, and strengthen networks internationally. This boutique inaugural meeting features a small group of agents, managers, and presenters invited to develop relationships and explore opportunities with the end goal to determine the viability of a larger conference in future years.
 
Ireland was selected as the inaugural host location for the rich legacy of folk music nationally, the profound influence of Irish culture on North American folk music specifically (where FAI is based), and a strong partnership history between FAI and the music export office of Culture Ireland. Additionally, FAI’s International Representative is based in Ireland and its Executive Director is originally from Ireland.
The event is presented in partnership with the Clonakilty International Guitar Festival and made possible in part through funding from Culture Ireland and Cork County Council.
 
Program Highlights
 
Over two days and three nights, Irish industry delegates and international guests will take part in networking sessions, panel discussions, and intimate pop-up showcases at a variety of local venues. Highlights include an exclusive live-interview with acclaimed songwriter Luka Bloom conducted by Lillian Smith of RTE Cork, and a special Lifetime Achievement Award presentation to iconic musician Dónal Lunny.

Dónal Lunny, FAI Lifetime Achievement Award
A lifelong musician, Lunny has been at the forefront of the Irish traditional music renaissance for over five decades. He was a founding member of various seminal Irish bands (Planxty, The Bothy Band, Moving Hearts, Coolfin) and continues to maintain a robust international recording and performing career with Mozaik, Triad, ZoDoMo, Usher’s Island, and Atlantic Arc Orchestra. Lunny holds the unique legacy of popularizing the bouzouki (a Greek instrument) in Irish music and has produced some of the most significant albums of the "Trad." music revival since the ‘70s. Recording and production highlights include work with Kate Bush, Paul Brady, Elvis Costello, Indigo Girls, Sinéad O’Connor, and Clannad. In 2008 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music from Trinity College Dublin and was also made a member of the 250-member national Aosdána, honoring his outstanding contribution to the creative arts in Ireland. Lunny has written music for many films and theatre productions, and he continues to divide time between composing, performance, production, and teaching.
FAI commissioned a special edition, Lifetime Achievement Award documentary short-film, honoring Dónal Lunny. The film will be shown at the event Thursday and followed by a short performance with longtime collaborator Paddy Glackin. You can view the film by clicking here.
